James Retail was formed in 2015 following the acquisition of the former GT Retail business, bringing together a portfolio of established convenience and news retail stores under one privately owned group. From the outset, the focus was on building a modern, service-led neighbourhood retail business that combined strong local presence with professional operational standards.
In March 2016, the business expanded significantly with the acquisition of First Stop News Limited, the holding company of Rippleglen. This added the Supernews and Maynews brands to the group, with stores trading across the UK and a substantial Home News Delivery operation. The move positioned James Retail as one of the largest operators in the country within this sector, strengthening its footprint in both high street and community locations while reinforcing its commitment to reliable, customer-focused local retail.
With a strong core of neighbourhood convenience stores and a growing presence in travel interchange locations, James Retail has established itself as a significant regional player within the independent convenience sector. The mix of community high street stores and high-footfall transport sites enables the business to serve customers in both everyday local settings and busy commuter environments.
The company is led by an experienced management team based at its head office in Barlborough, North-East of Derbyshire, providing operational support, buying strength and strategic direction across the estate. With a clear focus on sustainable growth, James Retail continues to seek new neighbourhood and travel locations to expand its successful convenience offer.
